plan ahead tips for moving
If you are moving, consider these tips to save you some time, energy (and maybe even a little money)....so you have the energy to unpack when you get there. Note: you still may need to take a nap.
1 >> Keep room-related items in the same box. This sounds like common sense. But, when it comes to filling the boxes, things can sometimes get a little fuzzy at the last minute. We just shove whatever we can, wherever we can and think: I'll deal with that later. Wait! Take a few extra minutes to help yourself later. If everything in the box goes in the kitchen, it will be easier to find all of the items you are looking for when you get there. It may even be helpful to have a reference list of your boxes. Like: 3 kitchen boxes, 2 bathroom boxes etc, so you can make sure nothing gets lost.
2 >> Use smaller boxes when packing. You will probably be tempted to fill the box to the top. This makes sense. A full box helps you feel like you're getting your money's worth if you have movers. Things probably won't shift around as much if you have them packed nicely to the top without a lot of extra space. If the box is smaller, it won't be too heavy to carry or in danger of falling apart in transit.
3 >> Label every box. Put a label with the room destination and box contents on every box, even if you think you'll remember what is inside. Some people even go so far as taking a photo of what is inside and taping it to the outside of the box. Decide for yourself if this seems crazy or helpful. At the very least, a label makes unpacking and finding specific items easier when you need them.
4 >> Pack yourself a suitcase. When you get to your new home you'll need all of your essentials right away. Why not put everything together in one bag? If you pack everything you'll need for the first few days, at least you'll have your toothbrush, even if you are too exhausted to unpack the whole bathroom.
5 >> Location, location, location. Put the boxes directly into the rooms where the contents belong. I was planning on doing this, but ran out of time and my movers unloaded all of the boxes into one room. It took me so long just to sort the boxes into the right room. Doing it up front, will for sure save you time and energy later.
6 >> Closets. If the closets aren't in great shape, clean and paint them before unpacking into them. You may think that you will unpack the closet and do the painting later. But usually the closet will be too full to unpack it all again. Save yourself the time and trouble, and do it once.
7 >> Sort in advance. Don't pack things you know you don't want or won't need at your new home. Before moving, go through everything and get rid of anything you can't use or don't use anymore. The more you get rid of, the less you have to move. This will save you money in possibly using a smaller truck and / or less help moving it all in.
